Moonville

Moonville was a town in the woods of Vinton County which at one time was a booming railroad town. All that exists now is a path where the tracks used to run, dug in the hills now overgrown with trees. Few foundations of the buildings and even fewer headstones in the cemetery are what now mostly comprise the ghost town. The other notable remnents of the town of Moonville are the ghosts which are said to haunt the area, most notably the ghost of the Moonville Tunnel.
The lengends are different, but the jist of the story is that someone involved with the railroad was killed on the tracks. His ghost now roams the tunnel area and is said to stand in the middle of the tracks and swing his lantern trying to warn the train of his presense.. The phenomenon has been sighted as recently as 1993 as reported in the Athens Messenger.
The Moonville Cemetery is also known to host paranormal activity. The cemetery is the final resting place of the Coe family, the founders of Moonville. Also, supposedly buried here is the body of the person acknowledged as the Moonville Ghost.
Lake Hope Furnace located near the state park was once used as an iron buning furnace. This is another area of activity that is haunted by a watchman who fell in and still appears watching the furnace at night.
