| On July 1, 1863 as General Lee's 75,000 Confederate soldiers advanced North towards Central Pennyslvania they learned they were being persued by 95,000 Union soldiers and were instructed to check their location and forge for supplies. Both sides met northwest of Gettysburg and a skirmish ensued with both sides reporting they found the enemy and reinforcements were sent to the area. Fierce fighiting occured for the next three days with it ending when Gen. Lee tried attacking the rear of the Union Army. His force of 6,000 men that was sent ended up being decimated and the Confederates eventually fled back to Virginia. |
